DIY kombucha beauty products
Ange loves making homemade face masks, scrubs and beauty products from kitchen ingredients — and kombucha and SCOBYs are regulars in the mix. Acidic kombucha has good toning properties without being overly drying, and it's a great use for the extra SCOBYs you rack up.

Kombucha SCOBY face mask
You could keep it simple and pop a whole SCOBY onto your face — or puree one in the blender and use that as a mask. Ange usually adds other ingredients depending on what's on hand and what the mask is for. No set recipe; she eyeballs everything, purees until smooth, and adjusts thickness by adding more of whatever's needed. It ends up pretty runny, so she applies it in the tub to contain spillage, lets it sit 10–15 minutes while soaking, rinses, and always follows with a good moisturizer. Frequent guest ingredients:
- Kombucha SCOBY (a splash of the kombucha liquid is fine too)
- Honey — gentle cleansing, brightening, anti-inflammation, moisture
- Orange blossom or rose water — toning, calming (and lovely aroma)
- Activated charcoal — detoxifying, deep cleaning
- Green tea — calming, anti-inflammation, skin clarity
- Granulated or brown sugar — exfoliation
- Coffee grounds — brightening, exfoliation
Kombucha SCOBY body scrub
Puree a SCOBY, raise the ratio of sugar and/or coffee grounds, and skip the other liquid ingredients. A little coconut oil or cocoa butter makes the scrub more emollient.
Kombucha toner
Add unflavored kombucha to a small spray bottle and dilute with rose water and/or orange blossom water. Spritz as a toner — and keep it chilled in the fridge for extra refreshment.
Kombucha soap
Ange is working on a good SCOBY soap recipe. Stay tuned!
